Hog Calls Guide
Wild Hog Calls: Grunts & Feeding Frenzy
Definition: hog calls mimic contented feeding, social contact, and fights to reassure sounders or spark dominance. Hogs are smart — the right social sound keeps them feeding instead of bolting.
By Ferdous Mahmud Akash · · 6 min readWhat hogs want to hear
- Contact grunt: short social grunts that say all clear. Best all-around sound.
- Feeding chow: rhythmic contented feeding. Keeps sounders rooted at bait and oaks.
- Piglet distress: high squeals that bring sows running — and big boars behind them.
- Boar fight: tusks, shoves and growls. Triggers dominant boars in breeding season.
Why do hogs spook at calls?
Almost always volume or context. A loud fight sequence over a calm feeding group sounds wrong. Match the mood: feeding sounds on feeding hogs, contact grunts on moving sounders, distress only when you want chaos. Start at 25–35% volume — hogs hear very well and punish exaggeration.
Bait-site playbook
- Pre-bait silent for 2–3 nights so sounders pattern the site.
- Opening night: loop feeding chows 20 minutes before expected arrival.
- When they feed: drop to soft contact grunts every few minutes. Silence is fine too.
- Stale sites: switch to piglet distress for one sit to break routine — then rest the site 3–4 nights.
Spot-and-stalk and night hunting
- Thick cover: contact grunts while still-hunting palmetto and creek bottoms. Stop, grunt, listen for answering grunts.
- Thermal/night: feeding loops hide your approach noise and hold groups under the light.
- Wind: hog noses beat everything. Hunt crosswind and never call across your own scent stream.
What is legal for hogs where you hunt?
Hogs are often classified as nuisance or non-game, so rules differ sharply from deer or turkey: night hunting, baiting, and electronic calls may be allowed where big-game rules forbid them. Texas, Florida, Georgia and other southern states are the most permissive — but counties differ. Check your state and county regs every season before baiting or hunting at night.
