Squirrel Calls: Mating Calls, Barks & Tactics

A squirrel mating call is a fast, excited chatter that pulls lovesick boars across the canopy — and squirrel distress is a secret-weapon predator sound. Learn every squirrel vocalization and how to hunt with them, for squirrels and for the predators listening too.

Squirrel sounds in the app

  • Mating chatter — rapid excited calls of the breeding chase
  • Territorial barks — sharp barks that locate squirrels for you
  • Squirrel distress — screaming cries that stop the woods — and call predators
  • Feeding sounds — soft cutting and rustling for relaxed setups

The squirrel mating call and the breeding chase

During the breeding runs of late winter and midsummer, several males chase one female through the treetops at full speed, all of them chattering. That excited mating chatter is a magnet: play it against a quiet oak flat and curious squirrels come to investigate the party. Set up near den trees and mast crops, play 30-second chatter bursts with 2-minute pauses, and watch the canopy — not the ground.

Still-hunting squirrels with sound

  1. Slip into mast-producing oaks or hickories before first light and sit against a wide trunk.
  2. Start with soft feeding sounds for 5 minutes to make the woods feel safe.
  3. Play bark-and-chatter bursts; real squirrels often answer, pinpointing themselves.
  4. Freeze on every answer and glass branch junctions — movement gives them away.
  5. Work a ridge slowly: 20-minute sits, then slip 100 yards and repeat.

Squirrel distress: the predator crossover

Every coyote, fox, bobcat, hawk and owl in the county keys on squirrel alarm and distress screams. Finish your squirrel hunt by looping squirrel distress for 15 minutes from the same seat — you will be amazed how often a "squirrel hunt" ends with predator fur. It is one of the most underused distress sounds in predator calling because almost nobody plays it.

Reading squirrel alarms

  • Relaxed chatter: all clear — predators and hunters alike can move.
  • Sharp repeated barks: a ground threat (you, a fox, a bobcat) has been spotted.
  • Tail-flagging + barking: aerial threat — hawks and owls overhead.
  • Sudden total silence: something serious is close. Freeze and watch.

What does a squirrel mating call sound like?

Fast, high-pitched excited chattering and buzzing from multiple animals chasing through the canopy. It peaks during the late-winter and midsummer breeding runs around den trees and mast crops.

How do you call squirrels in?

Play mating chatter or bark bursts in 30-second sequences with long pauses near oaks and den trees at dawn. Answering squirrels reveal their position — then still-hunt toward the sound.

Does squirrel distress call in predators?

Absolutely — coyotes, fox, bobcats, hawks and owls all investigate squirrel screams. Loop distress for 15 minutes after a squirrel hunt for a bonus predator stand from the same seat.

What time of day is best for squirrel calling?

First two hours after sunrise when squirrels feed most actively, plus late afternoon. Midday finds them denned up and unresponsive except during peak breeding chases.

Why do squirrels bark at me?

They have spotted a ground threat and are warning the woods. Freeze until the barking relaxes into chatter, or use the barks to pinpoint squirrels you have not seen yet.
