Mountain Lion Sounds & Calls

A mountain lion sound — the scream, the chirp, the growl — is the eeriest noise in western woods. Lions are callable where tags allow, and readable everywhere else: deer and elk behavior tells you when a lion is working the drainage. Sounds, setups, and the legal map.

Mountain lion sound, decoded

The famous mountain lion sound is the scream — a long, human-like wail, usually females in breeding season. Males answer with chirps and whistles that sound almost bird-like; both sexes growl, hiss and spit up close. Lions are mostly silent hunters, so any vocalizing means social business: breeding, kittens, or territory disputes. Hearing repeated screams maps a resident cat better than any track.

Calling lions where legal

  1. Confirm the season, tag quota and method rules — lion regulations change fast and quotas close zones mid-season.
  2. Hunt fresh kills and deer winter range; lions stay near food for days.
  3. Play fawn or calf bawls softly — lions stalk toward sound for an hour, not minutes.
  4. Give stands 45–60 minutes, far longer than coyote stands.
  5. Sit with your back to rock or a tree and watch behind you; approaching lions circle silently.

Reading lions without calling them

In most eastern and midwestern states lions cannot be hunted — but their sign still matters. Deer blowing at nothing, elk bunching nervously, sudden silence in squirrel woods: a lion may be moving through. Note the location and date; cats patrol huge circuits on schedules, and the same drainage will hold them again. Trail cameras on the pinch point confirm it.

Lion law in one paragraph

Western states manage lions with tags, quotas, hound rules and method restrictions that vary by unit and year — some zones close within days of quota fill. A few states ban lion hunting entirely; others allow it only with special permits. Because rules shift yearly, verify the current regulation booklet for your exact unit before scouting, let alone calling.

What does a mountain lion sound like?

Primarily a long human-like scream (females), plus chirps, whistles, growls, hisses and purrs. Most of the time lions are silent — vocalizations mean breeding, kittens or territorial disputes.

Can you call in a mountain lion?

Yes, where legal, with fawn and calf bawls played softly for 45–60 minute stands near kills and winter range. Lions approach slower and more silently than any other predator — patience decides it.

Is it legal to hunt mountain lions?

It depends entirely on state and unit: many western states offer tagged seasons with quotas, some ban it outright, and rules change yearly. Check the current regulation booklet for your exact unit before hunting.

How do you know if a lion is nearby?

Prey behavior: deer snorting at nothing, elk bunching, woods going silent. Add large round tracks without claw marks, scrapes, and cached kills covered with debris.

What should you do if you hear lion screams?

Note the time and place — you have mapped a resident cat. Hunt elsewhere that day if unprepared; return with a tag, a partner and a plan, since screaming lions are callable lions.
