Moose Calls Guide
Moose Calls: Grunts, Wails & Rut Timing
Big woods, big sound. Use bull grunts to challenge, cow wails to attract, and calf bawls to create curiosity — all with clear audio in Hunting Calls Pro.

- Bull grunt — short challenge grunts
- Cow wail — long rut wails that carry far
- Calf bawl — curiosity sound for quiet bulls
Rut game plan
- Set up high: call across lakes and bogs at first light.
- Cow first: 2–3 wails, then 30 minutes silent.
- Answer bulls: grunt back immediately, then rake brush.
- Stay put: bulls approach slowly. Give them an hour.
Stand calling vs still-hunting with sound
Two ways to hunt moose with calls. Stand calling wins the rut: pick a lake narrows or bog edge, cow-wail at dawn, then sit a full hour — bulls swim and stalk in slower than you expect. Still-hunting fits pre-rut: ease along old cuts grunting softly every 100 yards, stopping to listen twice as long as you walk. Raking brush with a paddle after your grunt sells the illusion at close range. Either way, hunt into the wind; a moose nose forgives nothing.
Moose noises, catalogued
Bull moose noises run from soft grunts and lip-smacking while feeding to deep roars during the rut. Cow moose answer with long, mournful wails that carry for miles across bogs; calves bawl sharp distress cries that bring cows charging. In late September, grunt-then-wait beats wail-then-grunt: bulls approach calling cows, so sound like the cow and let him do the walking.
When do moose call the most?
Late September through mid-October. Bulls grunt around the clock during peak rut; cows wail most at dawn and dusk.
Best time to call moose?
Late September to mid-October, dawn and dusk.
Cow or bull call?
Start with cow wail. Switch to bull grunt only when a bull talks.
How far do moose hear?
Over a kilometer on calm mornings. You do not need max volume.
